LASC: CASE INFORMATION FOR NON-CONFIDENTIAL MENTAL HEALTH CASES NOW AVAILABLE AT PUBLIC KIOSKS IN COURTHOUSES IN LOS ANGELES COUNTY

Case information for non-confidential mental health cases is now available for viewing at public kiosks found in clerk’s offices in courthouses throughout Los Angeles County. Access to case information for confidential cases, including Community Assistance, Recovery and Empowerment (CARE) Court cases, remains limited to parties to the specific case upon showing of valid identification. Available case information includes party information, scanned documents, information on past and future hearings and the case’s Register of Actions.

Non-Confidential Mental Health Case Access

To access non-confidential mental health case information, users can select the mental health litigation option at the public kiosk and enter the case number. Non-confidential mental health cases include cases brought under California Penal Code (PC) Section 1368 (cases in which the defendant’s competency to stand trial is in question) and California PC Section 1026 (cases in which a defendant may assert or has asserted a not guilty
by reason of insanity defense).

Confidential Mental Health Case Access

To protect the confidentiality of case information while simultaneously facilitating access for parties to the case, case information for mental health cases deemed confidential by California statute, which include CARE Court cases and Lanterman-Petris-Short Conservatorship cases, may be accessed through public kiosks at any courthouse in Los Angeles County using the following procedure:

  • Parties to a confidential mental health case must check in with a clerk at the Clerk’s Office in the courthouse in which they are visiting and present valid identification.
  • Once identification and access have been established, the party will be provided a unique access code for the public kiosk.
  • Upon receipt of the unique access code, the party may use the public kiosk and select the mental health option.
  • The party can then enter the case number and their access code to view case information for their confidential case.

See page two of this notice for step-by-step public kiosk screenshot instructions.
